As a UWaterloo Alum myself, it was a huge pleasure to host two of our Downtown Kitchener walking tours for the Alumni August Social!
Two groups enjoyed the Kitchener Mural Tour or Busy Berlin to Tech Corridor, followed by gelato from Whole lot-a Gelato 🍨 There might have been gelato before & after the tours 😊😉

Walking tours are a great addition to any group social 💕

The newest mural in Waterloo Region is a STUNNING

The newest mural in Waterloo Region is a STUNNING work of art rooted in community, local history, and sharing a story that’s been hidden for too long!

“The Song Continues” by artist @drippin_soul with support & inspiration from the Queen’s Bush Mural advisory group and @heartsopenforeveryone @earthscapeplay in Wallenstein. The mural celebrates the history and contribution of Black freedom seekers and settlers who came to the rural woods around Wallenstein, Hawkesville, Glen Allan, Elmira and Peel Township in search of freedom and the chance to rebuild a life.
Some descendants are still there today!

Make a visit to the Earthscape Play buildings in Wallenstein to see the mural up close and check out the interpretation signage.

Our Black history walking tour in Historic Galt, Downtown Cambridge, explores the lives and community of early Black residents in the 1800s. It’s sure to expand your perspective on this city’s early history.

We host our Black history walking tours in August for two reasons:

* August 1 is Emancipation Day in Canada, and
* August is Emancipation History Month in Canada & Ontario

On August 1, 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in the British Empire, which included Canada. Many people associate slavery with the United States, South America & the Caribbean, but an estimated 4000 Indigenous peoples and people of African descent were enslaved in Canada before 1833.
Since 1834, Black communities like Dresden, Chatham, Windsor, Owen Sound have celebrated Emancipation Day. Locally, Emancipation Day celebrations were held in Waterloo, Hawkesville, Berlin (now Kitchener) Glen Allan & Elmira. Most recently, Rhythm & Blues Cambridge began hosting an annual Emancipation Day celebration.

In 2008, the province of Ontario passed and Act to recognize August 1st as Emancipation Day. Canadian parliament recognized it in 2021, along with August as Emancipation History Month. Ontario and several other provinces followed suited to acknowledge August in this way.

Big hugs to my friend Sariye who owns & operates Turkish Cuisine at the Kitchener Market. 💕 After a weekend kitchen fire, she and the other vendors at the Kitchener Market will be closed during the clean up.

She is uncertain about what it means yet for her space and will know more in the coming weeks.
If you’ve ever experienced her very generous food portions and even more generous hospitality, you’ll know what I’m talking about!
