💥 She shapes HERstory! 💥
Our series, Women Who Shaped Waterloo Region, is the walking tour you’ve been waiting for!

Stroll with us in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo where we feature women and their stories that will help to reclaim women’s rightful place in our local historical landscape and broaden the way we talk about local history. Get it... ‘broad-en’?!

We aim to share untold, underrepresented or forgotten stories of educators, authors, politicians, doctors, community organizers, librarians! artists, workers, activists and more than a few trailblazers and rabble-rousers.

Sometimes these women overcame insurmountable odds to meet their accomplishments and sometimes they made the ordinary into something extraordinary!

So often local histories are told through the efforts of men, but we know that women have shaped our cities with important contributions, advancements and innovations and we want to talk about ALL. OF. THEM!

Of course, bring friends!

We’ve been hosting our Women’s HERstory tours for a full year now and it’s been SO. MUCH. FUUUN! We’ve had incredible conversations about how city histories are shaped, whose stories are told most often and how we can elevate and amplify more women’s stories to balance things out.

Touring with grandmas, mothers & daughters, colleagues, aunties & uncles, spouses, neighbours has sparked some spicy discussion!
We can’t wait for all the conversations with you.

I can always squeeze in one more walking tour when I travel! While travelling in Newfoundland & Labrador, I booked a tour with St. John’s Walking Tours @stjohnswalkingtours . It’s great to see other pros at work :)

I chose the Signature Tour of St. John’s which covered (roughly) 400+ years of history, culture, change, fun stories, storied figures, events and significant developments that have shaped St. John’s, Newfoundland. Tyra held the group engaged and curious for 2.5 hours and we could have easily stayed for an hour more :)
Next time you’re in St. John’s, book early, they sell out most days, especially weekends.

Hello from Newfoundland & Labrador!
Even when travelling, I just can’t help myself when it comes to local women’s history 😍

I heard about the Women’s Institute Craft Shop in Port Union, Bonavista Peninsula, Newfoundland and how they are the only WI Craft Shop in the province, since the 1990s.
WIs formed in Newfoundland around 1929 and the Port Union branch formed in 1967 and still GOING STRONG today (one of 14 still operating in the province)
1977, the branch received funding to build their own little log cabin which has served as the group’s meeting place and seasonal craft shop.

Like many WI groups they are dedicated to volunteer projects in their community and education, leadership development for their members.

It was a special treat to visit their shop, chat with some members, and snag a jar of mustard pickles!

Quilts sold at the Craft Shop are made by individual WI members who place the items on consignment. The branch adds a small mark up to cover annual building expenses, upkeep and community projects.
Their annual quilt raffle sells out every year!

I was so pleased to see the OPEN sign when I drove down the road!

Thanks for having us @uwaterlooalumni !

As a UWaterloo Alum myself, it was a huge pleasure to host two of our Downtown Kitchener walking tours for the Alumni August Social!
Two groups enjoyed the Kitchener Mural Tour or Busy Berlin to Tech Corridor, followed by gelato from Whole lot-a Gelato 🍨 There might have been gelato before & after the tours 😊😉

Walking tours are a great addition to any group social 💕

The newest mural in Waterloo Region is a STUNNING work of art rooted in community, local history, and sharing a story that’s been hidden for too long!

“The Song Continues” by artist @drippin_soul with support & inspiration from the Queen’s Bush Mural advisory group and @heartsopenforeveryone @earthscapeplay in Wallenstein. The mural celebrates the history and contribution of Black freedom seekers and settlers who came to the rural woods around Wallenstein, Hawkesville, Glen Allan, Elmira and Peel Township in search of freedom and the chance to rebuild a life.
Some descendants are still there today!

Make a visit to the Earthscape Play buildings in Wallenstein to see the mural up close and check out the interpretation signage.
